An attempt to reduce impacts of limestone quarries through biodiversity assessment and translocation: A case study at the Holcim Limestone Quarry Site in Puttalam, Sri Lanka

Abstract: A conservation project was implemented at a commercial limestone quarry site in Sri Lanka managed by Holcim Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. The project intended to assess the biodiversity of a proposed excavation site and to translocate fauna that will be affected by quarry operations such as forest clearance and blasting. The biodiversity of the area was surveyed using a rapid assessment technique, prior to the initiation of forest clearance and blasting. A total of 41 floral species and 220 faunal species were recorded from the project site. Around 90 % of the fauna were amphibians, reptiles and butterflies. Among these species, one endemic tree, a theraposid spider and 20 endemic vertebrates. Among the vertebrates documented, 9 species are categorized as nationally threatened. A total of 141 vertebrates and 85 arthropods and mollusks including endemics threatened species were captured and translocated to Sethtavilluwa area. This project is the first ever initiative in Sri Lanka aimed at reducing impacts of quarry operation on biota through rehabilitation and rescue operations. Such projects are invaluable as they will, at least in part assist in safeguarding biota that will be vulnerable to local extinction as a result of developmental projects.

Abstract: in fe-cu alloys prepared by pulsed electrodeposition, fe clusters form directly within a non-magnetic cu matrix. the clusters contain around 140 fe atoms and are superparamagnetic at room temperature. below 160 k, it is proposed that the clusters order into a so-called superferromagnetic arrangement. this behaviour is ascribed to the persistence of weak exchange interactions mediated by isolated fe atoms dispersed within the non-magnetic cu matrix.

Abstract: the objective of this experiment was to evaluate morphogenetic and structural characteristics and biomass production of buffel grass as a function of cut intensities and frequencies. a previously established pasture of buffel grass cultivar molopo was used. total area was splited in twenty 8 m2 experimental unities with 1 m border lines. a split plot scheme was used with plot in factorial scheme 2x2 to combination of two height of cut (60 and 80 cm) and two height post cut (20 and 40 cm). the experimental design was entirely randomized blocks, with five replicates named 2060, 20-80, 40-60, 40-80. there (p<0.05) of treatments for dry matter per cut production and higher values were observed to 20-80 and 40-80. tillering, leaf/steam ratio, number of alive leafs per tiller and diameter of plant were influenced by (p<0.05) by different management of buffel grass. leaf appearance ratio and phylocron were not different (p>0.05) between treatments. cutting frequency and intensities influenced tillering, leaf/ stem ratio and dry matter production for both the cut as to the total.

Abstract: Steels are used widely for production of machine components due to their versatility, low cost, ease of production and modification of their properties through heat-treatment. ST60Mn Steel is one of the common high strength steel produced in Nigeria and utilized for machine building purposes. Components made from this materials failed by wear, corrosion or both mechanism. The aim of this paper is to determine the influence of austempering heat-treatment on the corrosion-wear resistance of ST60Mn steel in cassava juice. The heat-treatment was performed by varying the austenitizing temperature, austempering temperature and time. The corrosion wear resistance was investigated under an instrumented pin-on-disc wear testing machine with the steel samples dipped in the cassava juice. The results obtained showed that the austempered ST60Mn steel has a wear rate of 3.0μg/cycle. While, the un-heat-treatment sample possess 70.1μg/cycle. This is a tremendous improvement in corrosion wear rate through the austempering heat treatment.
Constructing recent peat accumulation chronologies using atmospheric fall-out radionuclides

Abstract: Radionuclide dating is a robust technique for establishing the recent accumulation rate for most peatlands. In this article we review the production of ‘fall-out’ radionuclides and the concepts underlying the dating method. Some inherent problems such as the issues surrounding reduced natural radionuclide deposition, e.g. ‘continentality’, are highlighted. We describe the common radionuclide analysis methods, their application to peat studies, and the production of 210Pb activity inventories. To illustrate the radionuclide dating method we use case studies to demonstrate how these data can be used to derive peat accumulation rates during the last 100–150 years at contrasting sites using 210Pb supported by anthropogenic radionuclides.
miRNA expression profiles in chronic lymphocytic and acute lymphocytic leukemia

Abstract: micrornas (mirnas) are a class of small endogenous rnas that play important regulatory roles by targeting mrnas for cleavage or translational repression. mirnas act in diverse biological processes including development, cell growth, apoptosis, and hematopoiesis, suggesting their association with cancer. we determined the mirna expression profile of chronic and acute lymphocytic leukemias (cll and all) using the taqman? microrna assays human panel (applied biosystems). pooled leukemia samples were compared to pooled cd19+ samples from healthy individuals (calibrator) by the 2-ddct method. total rna input was normalized based on the ct values obtained for hsa-mir-30b. the five most highly expressed mirnas were mir-128b, mir-204, mir-218, mir-331, and mir-181b-1 in all, and mir-331, mir-29a, mir-195, mir-34a, and mir-29c in cll. to our knowledge, this is the first report associating mir-128b, mir-204 and mir-331 to hematological malignancies. the mir-17-92 cluster was also found to be up-regulated in all, as previously reported for some types of lymphomas. the differences observed in gene expression levels were validated for mir-331 and mir-128b in all and cd19+ samples. these mirnas were up-regulated in all, in agreement with our initial results. a brief target analysis was performed for mir-331. one of its putative targets, socs1, promotes stat activation, which is a known mediator of cell proliferation and survival, suggesting the possibility of an association between mir-331 and these processes. this initial screening provided information on mirna differentially expressed in normal and malignant b-cells that could suggest the potential roles of these mirnas in hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis.

Abstract: this contribution aims at the conceptual planning of a model of flexible cooperation among microenterprises, small and medium enterprises (msmes), so that it acts as a strongly stimulating practice of local agricultural development in livestock-production regions, such as the case of the misiones province, argentina, based on enhancing this component of entrepreneurial tissue through associativity. as main characteristics of the proposed model, its intersectoral (containing msmes from different sectors) and multi-relational character (establishing cooperation relationships of various types) stand out and it is based on the active participation of the stakeholders present in the territory. it is conceived to enhance the joint work of enterprises so that they can act afterwards as a group in an independent way, multiplying small networks of msmes and establishing a "virtuous cycle" favorable for sustainable local development.

Abstract: the association of education, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and interleukin-2 (il-2 +114 and -384) and -6 (il-6 -174) dna polymorphisms with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (hnscc) was investigated in a cohort study of 445 subjects. il-2 and il-6 genotypes were determined by real-time pcr. cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (hr) and 95% confidence intervals (95%ci) of disease-specific survival according to anatomical sites of the head and neck. mean age was 56 years and most patients were males (87.6%). subjects with 5 or more years of schooling had better survival in larynx cancer. smoking had no effect on hnscc survival, but alcohol consumption had a statistically significant effect on larynx cancer. il-2 gene +114 g/t (hr = 0.52; 95%ci = 0.15-1.81) and t/t (hr = 0.22; 95%ci = 0.02-3.19) genotypes were associated with better survival in hypopharynx cancer. il-2 +114 g/t was a predictor of poor survival in oral cavity/oropharynx cancer and larynx cancer (hr = 1.32; 95%ci = 0.61-2.85). il-2 -384 g/t was associated with better survival in oral cavity/oropharynx cancer (hr = 0.80; 95%ci = 0.45-1.42) and hypopharynx cancer (hr = 0.68; 95%ci = 0.21-2.20), but an inverse relationship was observed for larynx cancer. il-6 -174 g/c was associated with better survival in hypopharynx cancer (hr = 0.68; 95%ci = 0.26-1.78) and larynx cancer (hr = 0.93; 95%ci = 0.42-2.07), and c/c reduced mortality in larynx cancer. in general, our results are similar to previous reports on the value of education, smoking, alcohol consumption, and il-2 and il-6 genetic polymorphisms for the prognosis of hnscc, but the risks due to these variables are small and estimates imprecise.
