Organic Manures and Crop Residues as Fertilizer Substitutes: Impact on Nitrous Oxide Emission, Plant Growth and Grain Yield in Pre-Monsoon Rice Cropping System  [PDF]

Abstract: It has been previously argued that application of organic residues added in soils has a great impact on soil quality, grain productivity as well as greenhouse gas emissions. Substitution of chemical fertilizers has become a common practice in agricultural systems which consequently affect the greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural fields. To observe the effects of organic manures and crop residues amendments, five fertilizer treatments including conventional inorganic nitrogen fertilizer—NPK, cow manure, rice straw, poultry manure and sugarcane bagasse were applied in the field for two consecutive pre-monsoon rice seasons. Addition of rice straw, poultry manure and sugarcane bagasse decreased the cumulative N2O emissions by 14% and 31%, and by 1% and 7% and 5% and 3% in 2012 and 2013 respectively when compared with conventional fertilizer treatment (NPK) in both the seasons. Yield differences were not significant (p > 0.005) amongst the treatments, however, a slight increase was observed due to rice straw amendment over control. Soil organic carbon decreased by 11% - 17% under the application of organic residues which might have contributed to lower N2O emissions from the plots. Results of carbon equivalent emission (CEE) and carbon efficiency ratio (CER) indicated that incorporation of rice straw during pre-monsoon rice season had the potential to reduce the N2O emissions and yield scaled emissions of rice production at lower level than the conventional farmers’ practice of using chemical fertilizers (NPK).

Abstract: Of the 1418 patients with STDs, who attended the STD clinic between January 1996 to December 2000, 50 (3.4%) were children below 14 years of age. Boys (29) were more than girls (21). Syphilis was the most common STD found in these children (46.8%), followed by vulvo-vaginal candidiasis (19.2%), condylomata acuminata (10.6%), gonorrhoea (8.5%), herpes progenitalis (6.4%), chancroid (4.3%), perianal candidosis and perianal molluscum contagiosum (2.1 % each). Three children had more than one STD. A history of sexual abuse could be elicited in 30 children (60%), none of the children were positive of HIV. All children with symptoms pertaining to their genitourinary system should be evaluated thoroughtly for sexual abuse.
Nail changes in alopecia areata: Incidence and pattern

Abstract: One hundred consecutive patients with alopecia areata were examined for presence of nail abnormalities. Nail changes were seen in 44/100 (44%) of patients with most frequent occurrence in multifocal variety (30/44=68%). The commonest abnormality observed was superficial pits seen in 28(64%) patients. Presence and severity of nail changes may indicate a more severe and recalcitrant disease.

Abstract: Quiescent Type of H. Rosen & Stage 2 of C.L. Romano et al. for Infected Non Union of Femur after K-nailing (Küntscher nailing) require no debridement & removal of nail and therefore can be treated by a single stage procedure. There are a few reports of treating aseptic non-union of femur by compression alone or compression distraction over nail by Ilizarov Technique. However, no case of Infected Non-Union femur being treated by Accordion Manoeuvre with Ilizarov over nail in situ (i.e. without exchange nailing) has been reported so far. Here, we are reporting a case of Infected Non-Union following K-nailing for a fracture shaft of femur in a 15-year-old female, who was treated by this technique as a single stage procedure. An Ilizarov frame was mounted on the femur with nail in situ followed by Accordion Manoeuvre. The fracture was healed in 5.6 months with two cycles of Accordion Manoeuvre followed by rhythmic compression. There was no recurrence of infection.

Abstract: De-centralized nature of nodes, in ad-hoc networks, results in the users adapting their operationsindependently. Such operations are mostly biased upon the figures and data available for the parameterswhich are imperative for superior performance or, in other words, improved Quality of Performance (QoS)of the nodes. In centrally controlled networks following cooperative game theory principles, collectiveoperations are performed by the nodes for better QoS of the network. Although nodes in decentralizednetworks undertake individual operations, the final outcome of the whole network and thus the performanceof the nodes in the network are influenced by the operations of other nodes. Hence, a distributed resourceallocation approach in such a scenario can be modeled as a non-cooperative game. AsynchronousDistributed Pricing (ADP) is one such virtual pricing algorithm in which a user’s payoff is determined bythe difference between how much a given performance metric is valued and how much is paid for it. Userservice demands and priorities are modeled using numerically emulated QoS metrics termed as utilityfunctions. The network objective is to maximize the sum of all users’ payoff. However, for convergence ofthe sum of all users’ payoff to a global maximum, the determination of the QoS metric’s utility functionwith sufficient concavity is essential. Although supermodularity conditions have been previously definedand determined to obtain suitable utility functions, we have numerically and analytically illustrated that theconvergence performance characteristics fluctuates with the choice of QoS metrics in the algorithm forsimilar utility functions as well. We have assessed the optimality of utility functions under Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise ratio and Signal-to-Interference ratio based calculations. This paper also exploresinto the difference in performance characteristics obtained by the addition of a significant value noisevariance in the ADP algorithm.

Abstract: Modelling resource allocation problems in the form of non-cooperative pricing games takes into accountthe difference between how much a given performance metric is valued and how much is paid for it. For the convergence of the sum of all users’ payoff to a global maximum, the determination of the utility function is essential. Although supermodularity conditions have been previously defined and determined to obtain suitable utility functions, different utilities have significantly varying performance characteristics under similar network parameters. In an ad-hoc framework, absence of a central authority leads to uncontrollability of unfairness. Users could misbehave by broadcasting high price coefficients to force other users to transmit at a lower power. This paper proposes an adaptation of the Asynchronous Distributed Pricing Algorithm with a Deviation Detection Block that re-aligns the deviated system backinto the algorithm.
CONVERGENCE PERFORMANCE OF SINR AND SIR UTILITIES FOR A DISTRIBUTED RESOURCE ALLOCATION GAME

Abstract: In ad-hoc networks, the nodes are primarily decentralized in nature. The absence of a central controllerbecause of the decentralization characteristic of these impromptu networks results in autonomousoperations for each of the individual users. In such networks, the decisions taken by the users are basedon perceived measures or statistics which are collected dynamically. Decision taken by one node affectsand influences the other nodes. The scenario of such a network can be optimized using the principles ofgame theory. The final model of the scenario can be formulated as a non-cooperative game. Algorithmsbased on this model are devised for ad hoc networks. Applications of such algorithms include pricingschemes for distributed beamforming, bandwidth allocation as well as power control games.Asynchronous Distributed Pricing is a virtual pricing scheme for transmitting power optimization in adhoc networks. In this algorithm, the difference between the value of a given performance metric and theprice paid to attain it determines a user’s payoff and the network objective is to maximize the sum of allusers’ payoff. However, the determination of the utility function essentially determines the globalconvergence of the sum of all users’ payoff. Supermodularity conditions are fundamental constraints forglobal convergence of utilities in a pricing game which have been previously defined. This paper obtainssuitable utility functions satisfying the aforementioned constraints. This paper also demonstrates thatperformance characteristics of different utilities vary considerably under similar network parameters.This paper also assesses the optimality of utility functions under Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise ratioas well as Signal-to-Interference ratio based calculations and also explores the difference in performancecharacteristics obtained by the addition of a significant value of noise variance in the AsynchronousDistributed Pricing algorithm.
Hypopigmented pityriasis versicolor on Becker′s naevus : Hope for new method of treatment ?

Abstract: A case of hypopigmented pityriasis versicolor superimposed on pre existing Becker′s naevus associated with congenital melanocytic naevus is being reported for its rarity. The possible role of dicarboxylic acid and other free radicles produced by Pityrosporum ovale in treating Becker′s Naevus is also suggested.
