An assessment of abundance, habitat use and activity patterns of three sympatric pheasants in an Eastern Himalayan Lowland tropical Forest of Arunachal Pradesh, India

Abstract: Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot is rich in pheasant diversity, as eleven of the seventeen pheasant species in India occur here. Despite the richness, these pheasants have been least studied in their natural habitats and their current population status, ecology and behavioural patterns are unknown. We estimated abundance, habitat use and activity pattern of three pheasants, i.e. Red Jungle Fowl Gallus gallus (RJF), Kalij Pheasant Lophura leucomelanos (KP) and Grey Peacock Pheasant Polyplectron bicalcaratum (GPP) in Pakke Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh. Data collected from line transects and camera traps were used for estimating abundance, habitat use and activity patterns. Program Oriana 4.2 was used to determine the activity pattern of three species. Questionnaire survey was conducted around the protected area to determine the conservation threats for these species. Red jungle fowl had the highest density of 12.9 individuals/km2 and a photographic rate of 3.19/100 trap nights among all the pheasants. Shrub cover, litter cover and grass cover were positively associated (p<0.001) with pheasant detections, where as disturbance (p<0.001) was negatively correlated. 60% of habitat overlap was observed between KP and RJF. Dillenia indica dominated habitats were significantly correlated with pheasants detections (R=0.34, p<.0001). The mean activity of GPP, RJF and KP were 6.30 hrs ± 3.37 hrs, 7.49 hrs ± 0.14 hrs and 8.29 hrs ± 0.18 hrs respectively. Additional studies on current status of these species and management plans are critical for pheasant conservation in this critical biodiversity hotspot.

Abstract: Single crystals of pure and Li+ doped L-citrulline oxalate (LCO) crystals are grown successfully by slow evaporation technique. The effect of lithium doping on crystal properties has been studied. The samples are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, TGA, FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The presence of lithium in Li+ doped LCO crystals is estimated using AES. The thermal stability and the optical transparency region are found to be enhanced for the doped samples. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the doped crystal has improved considerably compared to pure L-citrulline oxalate. Lithium doping can hence be considered as a simple and advantageous technique to improve the thermal, optical and non linear optical (NLO) properties of the LCO single crystals.

Abstract: Long-term stability studies of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems require symplectic integration algorithms which are both fast and accurate. In this paper, we study a symplectic integration method wherein the symplectic map representing the Hamiltonian system is refactorized using polynomial symplectic maps. This method is analyzed in detail for the three degree of freedom case. We obtain explicit formulas for the action of the constituent polynomial maps on phase space variables.

Abstract: In order to perform numerical studies of long-term stability in nonlinear Hamiltonian systems, one needs a numerical integration algorithm which is symplectic. Further, this algorithm should be fast and accurate. In this paper, we propose such a symplectic integration algorithm using polynomial map refactorization of the symplectic map representing the Hamiltonian system. This method should be particularly useful in long-term stability studies of particle storage rings in accelerators.
Toric geometry and F-theory/Heterotic Duality in Four Dimensions

Abstract: We study, as hypersurfaces in toric varieties, elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds for F-theory compactifications dual to E8xE8 heterotic strings compactified to four dimensions on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds with some choice of vector bundle. We describe how to read off the vector bundle data for the heterotic compactification from the toric data of the fourfold. This map allows us to construct, for example, Calabi-Yau fourfolds corresponding to three generation models with unbroken GUT groups. We also find that the geometry of the Calabi-Yau fourfold restricts the heterotic vector bundle data in a manner related to the stability of these bundles. Finally, we study Calabi-Yau fourfolds corresponding to heterotic models with fivebranes wrapping curves in the base of the Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find evidence of a topology changing extremal transition on the fourfold side which corresponds, on the heterotic side, to fivebranes wrapping different curves in the same homology class in the base.

Abstract: There is a growing expectation from registering authorities and the public for health professionals to enter their respective professions armed with the necessary skills, attitudes and behaviours to be reflective practitioners. However, there is limited and inconsistent evidence of the effectiveness of pedagogic strategies used for teaching reflective practice in health practitioner courses. We therefore conducted an integrative literature review of recent original studies (2004-2014) to gain an understanding of current initiatives for teaching reflective practice. A key finding from the review is the shift from the reliance on written reflective activities to more dialogic and social based reflection. Studies that use reflective dialogue suggest that facilitated dialogue with peers and clinical educators is the most effective approach to foster deeper reflection, critical thinking and clinical reasoning. Also the consensus evident from the review is that for reflection to be meaningful it needs to be intentionally connected to clinical programs. Although we find compelling evidence of the usefulness of embedding reflective learning strategies in health curricula, repeated reference to a lack of adequate training to prepare health educators to teach reflective practice suggests that there is an urgent need for research into how this can be achieved.

Abstract: In this work an attempt was made to minimize the NOx emission of a crude rice bran oil methyl ester (CRBME) blend with less sacrifice on smoke density and brake thermal efficiency. Three factors namely fuel injection timing, percentage EGR and fuel injection pressure were chosen as the influencing factors for the set objective. Experiments were designed by employing design of experiments method and Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array was used to test the engine. MRSN ratio was calculated for the response variables and the optimum combination level of factors was obtained simultaneously using Taguchi’s parametric design. ANOVA was employed to analyze the variance of MRSN and the most influencing factor for the set objective was taken from the ANOVA table. Obtained combination was confirmed experimentally and significant improvement was observed in the response variables.
