Abstract: Furthermore, I believe that given their head start in being necessarily embedded in complementary studies that cross disciplines, sustainability scientists can, by example, enhance the relevance of their work to that of other disciplines. They can be in the van guard to address the human dimension by pointing to ways for individual scien tists to make their work more comprehensive, more defensible, and likely more credible. Coupled with a second updating of On Being a Scientist, we can help the individual scientist to shift into a mindset that turns the question “Why Should I?” into the clear-cut declaration “Why I Must.”

Abstract: the purpose of this research was to verify the perception of university students on the integration of computer technology in teaching and learning processes. the action research method was used to design, deploy and implement a model for online managing of learning evidence using free available web tools. to verify the relevance and functionality of the model, a survey was done among students who used it in a first university course of statistics, for creating, saving and presenting their homework's products. the results show that students perceive the need to integrate information technology in higher-education. they also see some learning benefits with the use of this technology.

Abstract: the lactate minimum protocol (lm) is preceded by a maximum effort to induce hyperlactatemia. objective: to verify the reliability of lm test with induced hyperlactatemia realized by exercise intensity individualized by the rating perceived effort (rpe). methods: the sample was composed of 20 students, physically active (25.4 ± 4.1 years, 14.1 ± 5.0% fats) who were undertaken to two tests with identical methodology of lm. induction of hyperlactatemia was performed by a test with four stages, lasting three minutes each, loads individualized by the pse (levels 10, 13, 16 and 17-20 last stage until voluntary exhaustion). after eight minutes of recovery the progressive test started with initial load of 75w and 25w increments every 3 min until exhaustion. results: the intensities of lm 1 (155.0 ± 23.8 w) and 2 (157.5 ± 27.0 w) did not differ statistically (p = 0.795) and showed good reliability (icc = 0.79) and agreement [-2.5 w of mean difference and ± 41.8 w of bias]. conclusion: the lm test, with loads for induction of hyperlactatemia individualized by the rpe, has shown to be reliable in physically active individuals.

Abstract: the objective of this study is to report on the experience of constructing and using an instrument to collect and analyze theoretical-methodological references of studies, in systematic literature reviews. the goal is for researchers to have available an instrument that is appropriate for evaluating the studies that present their theoretical foundations, and for health professionals to have access to the theoretical explanations for study results and their applications in the practice of health care. the dissociation of theory from practice may lead to a lack of motivation at the work site and practices of repeating procedures without any awareness of the underlying concepts that base the interpretation of a health-disease phenomenon. therefore we call on researchers to conduct reviews on the theoretical foundations of certain health-disease phenomena and we propose questions related to the inclusion criteria, critical appreciation and data extraction to be addressed in instruments.

Abstract: The number of publications is the first criteria for assessing a researcher output. However, the main measurement for author productivity is the number of citations, and citations are typically related to the paper's visibility. In this paper, the relationship between article visibility and the number of citations is investigated. A case study of two researchers who are using publication marketing tools confirmed that the article visibility will greatly improve the citation impact. Some strategies to make the publications available to a larger audience have been presented at the end of this paper.

Abstract:

Our research was focused on the identification of features, which was essential for educational digital products and the determination of their quality. The introductory analytical part of our research is focused on the analysis of existing sources of information related to the problems of research, production, appropriate use and evaluation of educational software environments. Consequently, we have divided the existing software products into three basic groups according to our main distinguishing feature. Second part of our paper is focused on various aspects, which are to be considered when assessing the quality of software solutions. The final part contains the presentation of results of our findings related to the most important features expected and required from digital learning tools by professional experts and specialists in given field.

Abstract: background: the stage of climacterium and menopause has been the reason for historical, literary and cultural references, despite the fact that in many cases it is ignored and even underestimated by women and many professionals. objective: to increase knowledge level on climacteric and menopause in the women studied. method: an educational intervention was conducted in women, who were seen in the gynecology office at the university teaching polyclinic josé martí in camagüey municipality, from january to august, 2010. the universe of study was constituted by 168 women, a sample of 30 patients through probabilistic random sampling was selected, which were applied an initial questionnaire in relation to knowledge about signs and symptoms, psychological disorders and consequences women may present as they begin the climacteric and menopause stage. subsequently was implemented an educational program on the considered aspects of interest and a month later was applied the questionnaire again. results were processed in a computerized way, statistics measures of frequency and percent distribution have been implemented, and results were presented through texts and tables. results: before the educational intervention the 76.6 % of women identified hot flashes as one of the most frequent symptoms and the 73.3 % sweats; only 60 % of patients noticed nervousness and depression respectively as most frequent psychological alterations which may be evident in this stage, the 60 % of them pointed out family lack of understanding as one of the consequences may occur at home. conclusions: ignorance regarding signs and symptoms in the stage of climacteric and menopause prevailed, psychological alterations which may be evident, as well as the consequences may occur at homes of the women studied, which was modified after the educational intervention.

Abstract: in brazil, biologic agents exposure lack information about healthcare workers' knowledge, attitudes and behavior, and there is no valid instrument to assess these issues. the purpose of the present work was to develop questionnaires to assess institutions and health care workers about their occupational exposure to biological material, using literature as a data source. medline, scopus and lilacs databases were searched by key words, analogous expressions, and descriptors related to the subject. from the 557 preselected articles, 91 (16.3%) were effectively included in the study. to obtain, analyze, and interpret data, contend and secondary data analysis techniques were selected. thematic categories and sub-categories were defined based on this study, and they guided the construction of two questionnaires - one for institutional assessment and the other to assess healthcare workers. seven independent ad hoc reviewers evaluated the apparent validity of the instruments. after the validation of these questionnaires in the field, they can be used for scientific research and for assessment of the aspects associated to the issues studied in this paper, as well as provide data for elaboration, implementation, and monitoring of professional practices and management.
Development and validation of the Portuguese version of the WHOQOL-OLD module

Abstract: objective: the increasing proportion of older adults in the general population and the specific characteristics of this age group show the need for the development of specific instruments to measure quality of life in older adults. the study aimed at describing the development and validation of the portuguese version of the world health organization quality of life for older persons (whoqol-old) module. methods: the whoqol-old instrument was administered in a sample of 424 older adults in the city of porto alegre, southern brazil, in 2005. the questionnaire comprises 24 items divided into six facets: sensory abilities; autonomy; past, present and future activities; social participation; death and dying; and intimacy. besides the whoqol-old module, the whoqol-bref, bdi and bhs instruments were also applied. the instrument's internal consistency was assessed using cronbach's alpha coefficient. results: the instrument showed adequate internal consistency (cronbach's coefficients ranging from 0.71 to 0.88), discriminant validity (p<0.01), concurrent validity (correlation coefficients ranging from -0.61 to -0.50) and test-retest reliability (correlation coefficients ranging from 0.58 to 0.82). findings concerning criterion validity need further studies. conclusions: the whoqol-old module is a useful alternative with good psychometric performance in the investigation of quality of life in older adults.
