Voluntary wheel running in mice increases the rate of neurogenesis without affecting anxiety-related behaviour in single tests

BMC Neuroscience , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2202-13-61
Abstract: Running altered measures of locomotion and exploration, but not anxiety-related behaviour in either test. 14?days running significantly increased proliferation, and differentiation and survival were increased after both running durations. 28?day running mice also exhibited an increased rate of maturation. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between the amount of proliferation, but not maturation, and anxiety measures in the open field of the 28?day running mice.Overall, this evidence suggests that without repeated testing, newly born mature neurons may not be involved in the genesis of anxiety per se.
The Use of Anti-Platelet and/or Anticoagulant Agents in the Prevention of Large Vessel Vasculitis-Associated Ischemic Complications: A Meta-Analysis  [PDF]
James Jeong, Lillian Barra
Open Journal of Rheumatology and Autoimmune Diseases (OJRA) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojra.2014.42017
Abstract: Objective: To determine the effectiveness of antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy (AP/AC) at reducing ischemic events in patients with Large Vessel Vasculitis (LVV). Methods: We performed a random effects meta-analysis of studies examining antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy (AP/AC) and ischemic events in Takayasu’s Arteritis (TAK) or Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). Severe ischemic events were defined as stroke, ischemic ocular manifestations and claudication symptoms. Any ischemic event included jaw claudication in addition to the above manifestations. Results: Seven studies met inclusion criteria: 1 TAK and 6 GCA. The majority of patients (>80%) were treated with ASA and treatment was initiated prior to diagnosis of LVV. Risk of severe and any ischemic event in patients with LVV treated with AP/AC versus no treatment was not significantly different (OR 0.570, 95% CI 0.243, 1.340 and OR 0.594, 95% CI 0.248, 1.421, respectively). For studies with follow-up data (26-76 months), AP/AC was protective for severe ischemic events (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.04, 0.83). Findings were similar when excluding studies that did not account for potential confounders, such as cardiovascular risk factors. Conclusion: At follow-up, antiplatelet therapy significantly decreases ischemic events in patients with LVV. However, in most cases of GCA, the treatment was initiated prior to the diagnosis of vasculitis. The benefit of initiating anti-platelet therapy at the time of GCA diagnosis remains unclear.
Perceptions of Women on Marriage in Namibia  [PDF]
Nelago Indongo, Lillian Pazvakawambwa
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2015.611137
Abstract: Marital pattern in a Namibian society is predominantly of never married women, and the rates are increasing, while the proportion of those getting married is falling, nevertheless, these proportions decline as age increases. Quantitative research revealed differences in marital status by place of residence, education level and age group suggesting that aspects of culture, marriage practices and customs change over time. Focus group discussions of 6 - 9 participants were conducted to construct supplementary in-depth understanding of women’s feelings and attitudes towards marriage in Namibia. Results indicated that women felt that marriage was still important for family formation. The practice of early marriage was reported to be still happening especially in remote rural areas but was on the decline. Marital union choice was dictated by parental guidance, childhood sexual abuse, poverty, culture, age, and religion. Most marriages were not stable and divorces were increasing due to issues of infidelity, poor communication, inpatience and intolerance, step children, financial matters, alcohol and drug abuse, young age at marriage, witchcraft allegations, in-law relationships and even poor cooking. Cohabitation was promoted by exorbitant lobola, marriage costs, modernization, media influences, poverty, and flexibility. The risks associated with cohabiting were gender based violence and passion killings in the event of dissolution and lack of legal representation framework especially with respect to property in the event of partner death. Among the never married women, reasons for not marrying included absence of acceptable mate on the marriage market; need for independence, infertility, fear of abusive relationships, bad past experiences, heart aches, and lack of good married role models to inspire them to also marry.

THE EFFECT OF FINANCIAL INTEGRATION ON FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH: Pre-Crisis Assessment of the Euro Region
Lillian Kamal
Economics and Finance Review , 2011,
Abstract: While it is evident that the integration that European countries are involved in through the European Union (EU) is beneficial in terms of labour and trade opportunities, the effect of such integration on financial development is unclear. This paper implements an innovative approach that examines the impact of financial integration on financial development, and subsequently on economic growth within a sample of EU countries, pre-financial crisis of 2008. Traditionally monetary depth measures are used to assess the size and development of the financial sector. However due to the centralized control of monetary policy, these monetary depth measures lose their effectiveness in assessing financial development within the EU. This paper therefore looks at bank-based measures of financial development in an effort to establish whether a relationship exists between financial development and growth in the European Union countries, and if so, whether this relationship has been affected by financial integration. The paper focuses on the time period before the 2008 financial crisis to avoid the impact of capital flight, failed banking sectors and budgetary issues. The results support the hypothesis that the benefits of economic and financial integration are not uniform. Financial integration does not seem to have a very significant effect on growth where financial development has been controlled for.

Abstract: F rste gang publiceret i UNEV nr. 9: Evaluering og feedback i netst ttet uddannelse, sept. 2006, red. Simon Heilesen. ISSN 1603-5518.

The Marriage of Music and Narrative: Explorations in Art, Therapy, and Research
Lillian Eyre
Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy , 2007,
Abstract: Music and narrative share similar goals – the expression of thoughts, feelings, emotions, and meanings. While narrative may be employed as an oral or literary form, as a research tool, or as a therapeutic technique, music, as an art form, is most often perceived as a performance art or compositional act. Elements of both music and narrative have common ontological roots in human communication and expression. Over the past 50 years, both music and narrative have gained stature as therapeutic practices. The first two parts of this paper will focus on how music may be used to narrate events and to express personal meaning in both art and therapy. The third part will reveal the results of a pilot research study that explored the relationship between verbal narrative and music improvisation in the creation of an autobiography. The subjects (4 music therapists) narrated their autobiography, then improvised on each period (Narrative Improvisation Method – NIM), or performed the tasks in reverse order (Improvisation Narrative Method – INM). Musical and verbal data were analyzed to compare what was evoked in the music and in the narrative. Subjects were interviewed about their experiences in both methods and the interview data were analyzed to gain a deeper understanding of the process. Implications for the development of clinical and research techniques that integrate both verbal and music narration are discussed.
Re-evaluating the relevance of José Martí

Abstract: [First paragraph] José Marti's "Our America": From National to Hemispheric Cultural Studies. JEFFREY BELNAP & RAüL FERNANDEZ (eds.). Durham NC: Duke University Press, 1998. viii + 344 pp. (Cloth US$ 49.95, Paper US$ 17.95) Re-Reading José Marti (1853-1895): One Hundred Years Later. JULIO RODR GUEZ-LUIS (ed.). Albany: State University of New York Press, 1999. xxiii + 158 pp. (Paper US$ 16.95) José Marti Reader: Writings on the Americas. DEBORAH SHNOOKAL & MIRTA MUNIZ (eds.). Melbourne: Ocean Press, 1999. xiii + 276 pp. (Paper US$ 19.95) Generated by the tide of commemorations in 1995 that marked the one-hundredth anniversary of the death of José Marti, a number of scholarly volumes have washed into the mainstream of debates on the origins and contradictions of identities now taking place across disciplines and geographic regions. A new generation of Latin Americanists, specialists of U.S. history, politics, and literature, as well as scholars in the ever-widening domain of cultural studies, have published works on José Marti's writings and life experiences. Taken together, they represent an unprecedented re-evaluation and reinterpretation of José Marti as both a man and a myth. In general, the methods, approaches, and conceptual points of reference on which these new works rely make for an exciting and unique set of arguments about who Marti was, why he mattered and what his writings teil us about the time in which he lived and the multiple societies of which he formed a part.
